What Rose Gold Actually Is

Pure gold is too soft for jewellery, so it is always alloyed. In yellow gold that is mainly with silver, in rose gold with copper, and that copper gives the warm tone. It has another consequence that is rarely mentioned: copper is harder than silver, so rose gold of the same carat is slightly sturdier than yellow gold. On a pave setting, where small stones sit in a dense grid, that is exactly the property you want.

Why a Warm Setting Suits These Diamonds

A diamond always picks up something of the colour of its setting at the edges. In a cool setting any trace of warmth in a stone reads as a flaw, while a warm setting absorbs that tone into the whole. These diamonds are G colour, which sits in the near-colourless range, and in rose gold that works in your favour: the minimal colour difference from a completely colourless stone disappears entirely against the warmth of the metal.

What SI2 Means

SI2 means there are inclusions in the stone that can be found under a ten-times loupe. At this stone size that is a sensible choice: on stones of this dimension they cannot be told apart by eye, so you are not paying for a clarity you will never see. A GDTC certificate is included in the box.

Pave in a Warm Metal

In a pave setting several small diamonds sit close together so they read as a single sparkling surface. In rose gold that creates a contrast you do not get with white metal: the metal between the stones stands out clearly against the white of the diamonds, so you actually see the pattern of the setting rather than everything blending together. That makes the whole softer and more personal than a pave in white gold.

How 4.7mm Looks

At this diameter the studs are visible but not emphatic. They stay put under a hat or against a phone and suit smart clothing, so they can be left in daily. Rose gold is also the tone closest to skin, which makes these studs read softer than the same size in white or yellow gold.

Care

Diamond attracts grease and that is the main reason a stone can look dull. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush along the underside of the setting will lift it away; that is where the light enters. On a pave setting, check now and then that all the small stones are still secure, because small stones in a dense grid are the most vulnerable to a hard knock. Solid gold has no layer that can wear through, so nothing comes off in the shower; still take the earrings out for sport and before the pool, because chlorine attacks the alloy and the setting.
