Lab grown diamond is real diamond. Not a stone that resembles it, but the same carbon structure, grown in a laboratory instead of in the earth's crust. Chemically, physically and optically identical: even a gemologist needs specialist equipment to tell the difference.
What the difference actually is
The price, and the origin. A lab grown diamond costs a fraction of a mined stone of the same quality, and no mining is involved. So for the same spend you get a noticeably larger or purer stone.

Hardness
At 10 on the Mohs scale this is the hardest material there is. Scratches are not a concern; the metal around it always shows signs of wear before the stone does.
