Moissanite is a gemstone that is almost impossible to tell apart from diamond by eye, but costs a fraction of the price. It was originally found in a meteorite crater and is made in laboratories today.

Moissanite versus diamond

Moissanite refracts light even more strongly than diamond, which gives it that characteristic rainbow sparkle. On the Mohs hardness scale it scores 9.25 against 10 for diamond — hard enough to wear every day without scratching. You mainly see the difference in bright light, where moissanite gives more flashes of color.

Moissanite versus cubic zirconia

Care

Soap and body lotion build up under the setting and make the stone look dull. Take your jewelry off before showering and sport, and brush the setting gently now and then with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush — the sparkle comes straight back.
