Engravable Jewelry: Signet Rings and Dog Tag Pendants

An engraving turns a piece of jewelry into something that is only yours. In this collection you will find two signet rings and two dog tag pendants: pieces with a surface large enough to set text into.

Signet rings

The signet ring is the classic example. Its flat head was originally used to seal documents with a family crest. Today you set initials, a date or a symbol into it. Our ring sizes 6 through 10 are US sizes; we do not carry half sizes. Look your measured inner diameter up in the ring size chart. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one.

What you can have engraved

Initials and names work best: short text stays legible. A date in figures is a good second. Bear in mind that legibility drops as you add characters: on a signet ring, three initials come out better than a full name.

Material and wear

An engraving sits in the metal, not on it, so it does not disappear. But on a plated piece the gold layer around the engraving can wear away faster, because the edges stand proud. The silver-colored signet ring and dog tag are bare, polished stainless steel with no coating, so nothing can wear off them and they can stay on in the shower. The 18K gold plated signet ring and the gold-colored dog tag come off before the shower, the gym and the pool.
