Figaro Chain Gold Stainless Steel (3MM & 6MM) with an Alternating Link
A figaro chain runs in a repeating pattern of one long link followed by three short ones. That rhythm is what sets it apart: where a cuban or curb chain is uniform along its whole length, a figaro gives the eye something to follow, which is why it reads as a chain with a design rather than just a chain. In a gold tone over stainless steel, in 3MM and 6MM.

Where the figaro comes from
The pattern is Italian, and the name comes from the barber in the opera. It has been a standard in Italian goldsmithing since the fifties, which is why a figaro reads as classic rather than trend-driven, and why it looks right in gold in particular: the long links catch more of the warm tone than the short ones do, so the pattern shows even at a distance.
What 5x PVD does for a figaro pattern
The gold tone on this chain is applied by physical vapour deposition, five layers of it. The colour is bonded to the steel molecule by molecule inside a vacuum chamber instead of being laid on top of it in a plating bath, which makes the finish harder and considerably more scratch-resistant than ordinary gold plating. On a figaro that counts for more than on a flat chain, because the pattern is not level along its length: the long link sits proudest and meets your collar, a seatbelt or a jacket zip before anything else does. A bonded finish is exactly what you want on the part that gets touched most.
Why choose a figaro chain?
Alternating pattern that stays visible where a uniform chain flattens out
Flat links that lie against the skin rather than rolling
The long links make good anchor points for a pendant
Stainless steel core that keeps its shape and never rusts
Three lengths, from close-fitting to collarbone
Worn by men and women alike
Choose your width: 3 or 6 mm
The gap between these two is wider than the numbers suggest, because the pattern scales up with the links.
3MM: fine and understated. The pattern is a detail you notice up close, and it sits comfortably under a collar.
6MM: twice the width and a pattern you can read across a room. A statement chain worn over a t-shirt.
There is no middle width here, so if you want something between the two, our cuban chain runs 3, 5 and 7 mm.
Choose your length: 45, 50 or 55 cm
45cm: sits high at the base of the neck.
50cm: just above the collarbones, and the most chosen length.
55cm: on the collarbones, where a pendant sits well.
Measure a chain you already own from clasp to clasp and compare. Between two lengths, the longer one gives the more relaxed drape.
Keeping the gold tone bright
The core is stainless steel, so the chain holds its shape and will not rust, and the PVD finish is built for daily wear. One habit keeps it looking its best: take it off before swimming, sport and the shower, put it on once aftershave has dried, and wipe it with a soft cloth now and then. A flat link also gives friction fewer edges to catch than a woven one, which works in your favour here.
What to wear it with
The matching gold figaro bracelet uses the same pattern, and worn together they read as a set. A figaro also carries a pendant well, since the long links give the bail room to sit. See the full figaro collection for the silver version.
