Signet Rings for Men

You recognize a signet ring by its flat, wide face. That surface was originally used to seal documents with a family crest; today you put initials, a date or a symbol on it. In this collection the men's signet ring comes in two versions: silver-tone stainless steel and 18K gold plated.

Which size do you need?

Sizes 6 to 10 are US sizes; we do not stock half sizes. Measure the inner diameter of a ring you already wear and look it up in the ring size chart: size 6 is 16.5 mm and size 10 is 19.8 mm, with 0.8 mm between two sizes. Choose the smallest size that still slides smoothly over your knuckle, even if you are in doubt between two sizes: a signet ring has a heavy, flat face, and if it sits too loose, the face turns to the side and the engraving disappears from view. Wearing it on your little finger? Measure that finger itself and never copy the size of your ring finger.

Which finger do you wear a signet ring on?

Traditionally on the little finger of your non-writing hand, so the ring does not rub against paper or a keyboard. The ring finger works too, but there a signet ring is quickly read as a wedding ring. What do you engrave on it?

Initials work best: three letters stay clearly legible on this surface, while a full name quickly becomes small. A date in numbers is a good second option. When ordering, you choose between a text engraving and a photo engraving. The engraving goes into the metal, not onto it, so it does not wear off. Family crest or initials

With photo engraving, a family crest or a logo can go on the face as well. Supply a sharp image with clear lines and few small details: fine lines get lost on the small surface of the face. Initials are the classic choice and stay the most legible; a crest is more personal, but needs a simple design.

Pairing

A signet ring goes with almost anything, because it shows a flat face instead of a link. Match the color of your watch or bracelet on the same hand, and do not wear a second wide ring on that hand. On the other hand, a slim ring or a Cuban ring works.

Silver-tone or gold-tone

The silver-tone signet ring is bare, polished stainless steel with no coating: nothing can wear off, the engraving comes out sharpest and you can keep it on in the shower. The 18K gold plated signet ring has a 2.5 micron gold layer on that same steel base. Around an engraving the edges stand proud, so the layer wears faster there: take that ring off before the shower, the gym and the pool.
