A classic signet ring with a flat top face for engraving with initials, a name or a symbol. The base is stainless steel with real 18K gold plating at 2.5 microns. This is the only steel product in the range with real gold plating instead of a PVD finish, and that is a deliberate choice.

Why Plating Here and Not PVD
Our other steel jewelry has a gold-tone PVD finish: harder and more scratch-resistant, but it is a colored layer rather than gold. On a signet ring what matters is the color close up, because there is a large face of metal on show and the ring sits on your hand rather than hanging at a distance. Real 18K gold plating gives a warmer, deeper tone than PVD can reach. Against that, plating is softer, so this ring asks a little more care than a PVD one.
What 2.5 Microns Means
Micron is the thickness of the gold layer. What the jewelry trade calls gold plated often starts around 0.5 micron; this layer is five times as thick. It is not a guarantee of a number of years, because how long a layer lasts depends on how you wear it, and of all jewelry a ring takes the most knocks. Take it off before DIY, sport, washing up, showering and swimming, and the color stays even for longest.
What You Can Put On It
The flat top face has room for initials, a name, a date or a small symbol, and a photo engraving is possible too. Keep it short: on a signet ring a single letter or a set of initials comes out more crisply than a face filled with writing. Engraving removes material, so the cut goes through the gold layer and takes on the color of the steel underneath. On a single large initial that contrast between gold and steel is the classic effect, but it makes fine detail busier; if you want a photo or a longer text engraved, the silver version is the better choice.
Choosing Your Size
The ring comes in sizes 6 to 10. These are US sizes and half sizes do not exist; if you are between two sizes, take the larger one. You can find which diameter matches which size in our ring size chart. Measure at the end of the day, because fingers are slightly thicker then than in the morning. A signet ring has a heavier head than a plain band, so it must not sit too loose: if it turns, the flat face ends up on the side of your finger and the engraving disappears from view.
Care
Soap and hand cream collect in the engraved lines, which dulls the text over time. A dry, soft toothbrush makes it crisp again. Otherwise lukewarm water and mild soap are enough, always dried thoroughly. Do not use an ultrasonic bath or abrasives: those are meant for solid metal without a finish and will strip plating away.
