Clover bracelet: black onyx or iced out cubic zirconia

1. The shape: four leaves around one center point
The four leaf clover is not a species of its own. It is a mutation of common white clover, Trifolium repens, which normally carries three leaves. Its rarity is the whole point of the symbol.
In jewelry that shape is reduced to four equal leaves around one center point, together roughly a rhombus. All four faces therefore sit at the same height, so every link presents the same surface to the light four times over. With an opaque stone you get four dark patches in a row, with a faceted stone four flashes.

2. Black onyx: a stone that swallows light
Onyx is not a rare gemstone and does not pretend to be. It is a form of chalcedony, meaning quartz with crystals too small to see individually. On the Mohs scale it sits around 6.5 to 7, hard enough for daily wear.
The key property is optical: onyx is opaque. Light does not pass through it and is therefore not returned from inside it either. What you see is only the polished surface. That is why onyx is cut flat or slightly domed rather than faceted: facets need light that can enter the stone.
On a wrist the stone behaves like a hole in the metal. The gold colored outline keeps its shine, the four leaves stay black, and that contrast is what you see from a meter away. Wear a lot of black and the onyx sinks in. Wear light or off white and it jumps out.
3. Iced out cubic zirconia: 5A, and what that grade says
The silver clover bracelet goes the other way. There is no opaque stone in it at all: every leaf is packed with faceted cubic zirconia graded 5A.
Cubic zirconia is sorted on a letter scale running from A through AAA to 5A. That is not a scientific standard but a trade grading, and it says three things at once: how colorless the stone is, how clean it is inside, and how precisely the facets are cut. 5A is the top step. Where dozens of stones sit side by side that last point matters most: one stone set slightly off catches light at a different angle than its neighbors and shows up immediately.
Optically, cubic zirconia is the mirror image of onyx. The refractive index sits at 2.15 to 2.18, high enough to return incoming light from inside the stone instead of letting it leak out the back. Dispersion is 0.060, the splitting of white light into color, and that is what gives the flash on movement. On Mohs, cubic zirconia sits around 8 to 8.5, so harder than onyx. 4. The two side by side: when do you wear which
The difference fits in one sentence. The onyx version is quiet and graphic and works in daylight. The iced out version needs point light and only comes alive under a lamp or on a night out.
Wear the bracelet to the office or under a shirt cuff and the onyx version is the safer pick: it does not glint along with every movement. If you want it noticed, that is exactly the reason to take the cubic zirconia one.
There is a stacking argument too. The onyx version carries black and therefore combines with almost anything else you hang around it. The iced out version competes with every other stone set piece on the same wrist. 5. Material and sizes
The gold version is built on stainless steel with five layers of PVD in gold color. PVD is applied in a vacuum chamber, where the color is bonded to the steel at molecular level instead of being laid on galvanically. Stainless steel is the least moisture sensitive base we carry. The silver iced out version is solid 925 sterling silver, so 92.5 percent pure silver topped up with copper for strength, with five layers of silver colored PVD over it. The precious metal is in the piece itself rather than in a coating, and thanks to that PVD you do not have to polish it the way you would untreated silver. Those two size runs do not line up: 19 and 22 cm for the gold one, 18 and 21 cm for the silver one. Measure your wrist and add about 1.5 to 2 cm, so the bracelet can turn without sliding off your hand. In doubt, use the bracelet size chart.
6. The pendant as an alternative

One thing before you order: this is a pendant, not a necklace. You choose the chain separately, and that is deliberate, because the link decides how a pendant like this hangs. A pendant pulls on one point, and a flat link twists under that pull, which leaves the clover sitting crooked. A round strand does not. The silver box chain in 2 or 3 mm is the obvious choice here: round enough not to twist, narrow enough not to compete with the pendant.

7. Care: onyx and cubic zirconia do not ask the same thing
Onyx. Chalcedony is more porous than it looks and is glued into the link. An ultrasonic bath is therefore a bad idea: the vibration carries into that setting and the bath can dull the polished face. Use lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth, and dry it well.
Cubic zirconia. The stone itself can take far more, but the problem sits elsewhere. When stone set pieces look dull it is almost never wear, it is grease. Hand cream and soap collect under the setting, and that is exactly where the light gets in. A soft toothbrush along the underside of the settings clears it.
For both, the same order applies: perfume, deodorant and cream first, let it dry, then put the bracelet on.
Four mistakes you spot straight away
- Putting onyx in an ultrasonic bath. The setting is glued and the whole effect of the stone sits in the polished face. Lukewarm water and a soft cloth is the entire story here.
- Mixing up the size runs. The gold one comes in 19 and 22 cm, the silver one in 18 and 21 cm. Ordering blind in the same size as your previous bracelet puts you a centimeter off.
- Two stone set bracelets on the same wrist. They catch the same light and flatten each other out. Pick one with stones and keep the rest plain.
- Ordering the pendant and expecting a chain with it. You choose that separately, and the link decides whether the clover hangs straight.
