925 Silver With PVD: Why That Is Rare

Silver reacts to air and sweat and darkens over time; on most silver jewellery polishing simply comes with it. Here there is a layer over the silver applied with PVD, bonded in five molecular layers. That layer shields the silver from the air, so tarnishing takes longer to appear. Where the layer wears through, the silver is exposed again and tarnishes as silver does. You are paying for the precious metal and for the treatment over it, and that is exactly why you rarely see this combination.

On a Set Pendant the Base Counts Double

A fully set design depends on the settings around the stones. Silver is soft enough to close them tightly and hard enough to hold them in place, which is why it has been the standard material for setting work for centuries. And unlike a coated base of non-precious metal, if wear does occur no other metal appears: underneath there is simply silver.

The Four-Leaf Clover

The clover shape has an advantage a cross or a letter does not: it is instantly recognisable by its silhouette from a distance, even when you cannot pick out the individual stones. So the pendant reads as a clover at any distance rather than as a patch of light. That also makes it one of the few pieces that lends itself naturally as a gift with a message.

Which Chain Goes With It

At 3.8 cm tall the pendant has enough weight to ask for a sturdier chain. A box or cuban of 2mm to 3mm is the safe base; on a finer chain the pendant pulls the line out of shape. Choose the same silver tone so pendant and chain match in colour.

Care

There is a PVD layer over the 925 silver, and that is a finish that can wear through. So take the pendant off before the pool, the shower and sport and store it dry. Where the layer wears through, the silver shows and that spot can tarnish; a silver polishing cloth removes it, but use it only on the silver, not over the layer or the stones. Dust and soap collect in the setting, and that is what dulls the sparkle first. A dry, soft toothbrush lifts it out. Do not use an ultrasonic bath or abrasives.
