Why Blue Works on a Cool Tone
A coloured stone absorbs part of the light spectrum and returns the rest: less sparkle, more colour. Against a cool silver-tone background blue reads more sharply than against gold, where the warm undertone weakens the colour. That is why this design is made in silver tone, so the blue stays blue instead of looking greenish.
18 or 20 cm
Measure your wrist just below the wrist bone and add about 1.5 cm: below 17 cm take 18 cm, above that 20 cm. At 6.5mm this is the narrowest iced out piece we make, which means it still stays in proportion next to a watch where a wider set piece would compete with it. If you fall between two sizes, take the smaller: at this width a bracelet that sits too loose turns the cross to the underside of your wrist.
Why a Copper Alloy and Not Stainless Steel
A fully set cross calls for dozens of small settings that meet each other precisely. Copper can be worked more finely than stainless steel, so the setting closes tightly around each stone and almost no metal stays visible between them. Copper is also denser than hollow steel, and on a wrist you notice that straight away: the bracelet lies heavy rather than tinny.
Five Layers of PVD, and Why That Counts on a Wrist
The silver colour is applied with PVD, bonded in five molecular layers, which makes the finish considerably harder and more scratch-resistant than an ordinary coating. On a wrist that weighs heaviest, because it rubs along sleeves and table edges all day. On a cool tone a worn spot would also show immediately as a warmer undertone. The alloy underneath is nickel-free.
Keeping It Sparkling
A copper alloy is more sensitive to moisture than steel, so this is a piece for going out rather than for the gym. Take the bracelet off before showering, swimming and training, apply hand cream and fragrance before you put it on, and store it dry. Hand cream collects between the stones, and on coloured stones that shows, because the colour dulls; a dry, soft toothbrush lifts it out.
Styling
Wear it on your free wrist rather than beside a watch: a steel case is harder than the finish and will tap it dull. If you want a set, the cross chain with blue stones in the same width and finish is the logical addition. Do not combine it with anything else that has colour in it, or the tones start competing.
