The king's link is built from small links that interlock layer by layer, creating a dense strand that catches light from several sides at once. That is why this chain already stands out at 5mm without needing a thicker link. The base is stainless steel, polished to a silver tone: there is no layer on it, because the steel itself already has that colour. For that look you pay a fraction of what solid silver costs.

The biggest difference is not the colour but the upkeep. Real silver reacts to air and sweat and darkens over time, which you polish off with a cloth. This chain does not do that: the tone stays as it was on day one. Against that, solid silver is a precious metal, feels heavier and can always be restored. If you want that route, the king's chain in 925 sterling silver is the counterpart, finer at 2,5mm and considerably more costly. If you want a broad chain you put on and then forget about, steel is the better choice.
