Why Silver Engraves More Quietly Than Gold

Engraving removes material. On a gold-tone pendant you cut through the PVD layer down to the steel underneath, so the engraving takes on a different tone from the surface around it: a clear contrast that can look good but does not suit everyone. On this silver-tone pendant there is no layer: you cut into the same metal, so the text is subtler and the whole thing reads more quietly. Choose gold if you want the engraving to stand out, silver if you want it to belong.

What You Can Put On It

At 18 by 30 mm there is room for more than initials alone: a name with a date, a short line, or the coordinates of a place that means something. Bear in mind that smaller letters come out more crisply on a flat face than large ones, and that a short text looks tidier than a pendant filled with writing. Settle on the wording before you order, because an engraved piece is made specially for you.

Bare Steel on the Largest Flat Face

The silver colour is the polished steel itself and not a layer over it. On this pendant that counts for its own reason: this is the largest unbroken face in the collection and it lies against your shirt all day, so there is more surface taking wear than on any link type. Because there is nothing on it that can wear through, the face around your text stays one tone instead of a lighter patch appearing next to the engraving.

Which Chain Goes With It

This pendant has some weight, so it asks for a chain that can carry it. A box or cuban of 2mm to 3mm is the safest base; on a finer chain the pendant pulls the line out of shape and the strain lands on the clasp. A box or franco also does not twist, which is exactly what you want with an engraved face. Choose the same silver tone and go for 55 to 60 cm, which brings it out at chest height.

Care

You do not need to take the pendant off to wash your hands, in a shower of rain or under the shower: there is no layer that can wear through. Do take it off before the pool, because chlorine is more aggressive than shower water. Rinse it under the tap after seawater or chlorine. You will never need silver polish, because no tarnish forms of the kind you get on real silver. Dust settles in the engraved lines, which dulls the text over time; a dry, soft toothbrush makes it crisp again.
