Which Chain Goes With It

A compass is round and compact, so it does not need a heavy chain to carry it. A box or snake of 1.5mm to 2mm lets the pendant do the work; a rope or cuban of 3mm gives a bit more body if you want the chain to be seen as well. Choose the same silver tone where you can, so pendant and chain match in colour. At 55 to 60 cm the pendant lands at chest height, where it shows best over a T-shirt.

Why Bare Steel Is Practical Here

The silver colour here is not a coating but the polished steel itself. On a pendant most of the wear sits around the bail where the chain runs through, exactly where metal rubs against metal. Because there is nothing on top that can wear through, that friction leaves no lighter patch the way it would on a gold-tone pendant. The gold compass pendant does have a gold layer, and that is where the difference in wear advice between the two comes from.

Care

You do not need to take the pendant off to wash your hands, walk through a shower of rain or step into the shower: silver-tone steel is bare steel with no coating. Do take it off before the pool, because chlorine is harsher than shower water. Rinse it under the tap after seawater or chlorine. You will never need silver polish, because no tarnish forms of the kind you get on real silver. Dust settles in the engraved lines of the compass rose and dulls the relief; a dry, soft toothbrush lifts it out.
