Why This Costs More Than a Steel Rope

We sell the same shape in stainless steel for a fraction of the price, so it is a fair question. The difference is in what you are holding. Steel is harder and has a finish that does not tarnish, but it has no material value and cannot be repaired. Silver is a precious metal: it has weight, it holds value in the metal itself, and a jeweler can always do something with it, whether that is shortening or soldering. It is a choice between practical and lasting, not between good and better.

Tarnishing, and Why It Is Not a Fault

Silver reacts to air and sweat and darkens over time. That belongs to the metal and a silver cloth lifts it straight off. On a rope it does ask a little more attention than on a flat chain, because the spiral has grooves a cloth does not reach on its own. Wear it often and it tarnishes more slowly: contact with your skin keeps the surface moving.

50, 55 or 60 cm

On a rope, length works differently than on a smooth chain, because the effect lives in the repetition of the twist. The more chain hangs free, the further you can follow that spiral. At 50 cm (20 in) it falls around the collarbone and stays inside a shirt collar, 55 cm (22 in) is our best-selling length, and at 60 cm (24 in) the twist comes into view over its full length above a T-shirt.

How It Wears

At 3mm the chain is noticed without becoming a statement, and the twisted links catch light from more angles than a smooth chain of the same width. Bear in mind that a rope turns with your movements: fine when you wear it alone, but a pendant ends up hanging sideways during the day. For a pendant, a box or franco is the better carrier.

Care

Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and dry it thoroughly. Take it off before the swimming pool, because chlorine attacks silver. No abrasives or ultrasonic bath. Soap collects in the grooves of the spiral, so rinse well after cleaning and pat it dry. Store it separately in the box it came in, because silver resting against other metal scratches and tarnishes faster.
