A compass is one of the few symbols understood without any explanation: direction, and deciding for yourself which way to go. This version is stainless steel with a gold-tone finish applied in five layers of PVD, and it is round in shape, so it always hangs straight however the chain turns.

Why a Compass, and Who For
Where most figurative pendants are mainly decorative, a compass carries a meaning people recognise immediately. That makes it one of the few pieces that lends itself naturally as a gift with a message: for someone moving house, starting something new or travelling a lot. It is also large enough to wear on its own and small enough to layer, which few pendants manage at the same time.
Five Layers of PVD, and Why That Counts on a Compass Shape
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. The gold colour is bonded to the steel at molecular level inside a vacuum chamber rather than laid on galvanically, at Carpe Ice in five layers. That makes the finish noticeably harder and more scratch-resistant than a standard plated layer, the same technique watch brands use for gold-tone cases. On this design the difference sits in the relief: a compass rose is not a flat disc, because the points of the star and the raised rim stand proud of the recessed face. It is exactly on raised edges like those that an ordinary gold layer thins first, and that is what makes a worn pendant look tired while the flat parts are still fine. It is not solid gold, so take it off before the pool, the shower and sport, and store it dry. The silver-tone compass pendant does not need that: it is bare steel with no coating, while this one carries a gold layer that can wear through.
Which Chain Goes With It
Keep the chain narrower than the pendant, so the compass leads. A box or franco link keeps it facing forward, because those do not turn with your movements; a rope does, and then the compass hangs sideways by midday. At 55 to 60 cm it lands in the middle of the chest, which suits a round pendant best. Choose the same gold tone for pendant and chain, because two tones mixed read as unintended rather than deliberate.
Care
A pendant lies against your skin all day, so it picks up more sweat and aftershave than a chain does. Put it on once fragrance and aftershave have dried, and wipe it with a soft cloth. Dust collects in the recessed lines of the compass rose; a dry, soft toothbrush brings the detail back.
