You recognize a tennis bracelet or tennis necklace by its continuous row of equally sized stones, each set separately in its own link. Because the setting is flexible, the piece follows your wrist or neck instead of standing stiff.

Where the name comes from

The term was born when tennis player Chris Evert lost her diamond bracelet during a match and had play stopped to find it. Ever since, this style has been called the tennis bracelet.

Bracelet or necklace?

The bracelet is the classic model and the most worn: subtle enough for every day, yet it catches the light all the time. The tennis necklace is a lot more eye-catching and works best on its own, without a second chain next to it. This collection also includes a moissanite tennis ring with the same row of stones, in US sizes 7, 8 and 9.

Which tennis bracelet width?

The regular tennis bracelet and necklace come in 3 and 5 mm. 3 mm is fine and fits next to a watch; for the bracelet it is also the width we sell most often. 5 mm has bigger stones and can be seen from a distance. The 10 and 12 mm tennis cluster has several stones side by side and is a clear statement. The moissanite tennis bracelet and necklace are 5 mm wide.

The right size

The tennis bracelets come in 18 and 20 cm, the tennis cluster bracelet in 18 and 21 cm. Measure your wrist just below the wrist bone and add 1.5 to 2 cm. A tennis bracelet can sit a little looser than a link bracelet, so it turns with your wrist and the stones keep catching the light from a new angle. The tennis necklaces come in 50, 55 and 60 cm, the cluster necklace in 50 and 55 cm.

Tennis bracelet for men

A tennis bracelet has long stopped being a women's piece. For a man, 5 mm works best when worn on its own, and 3 mm when you combine it with a link bracelet or wear it next to a watch. Choose the color of your watch, and wear only one stone-set piece on the same wrist.

Silver-tone or gold-tone?

Choose the color that comes back in your watch or your other jewelry. The silver-tone tennis bracelet goes with a steel watch and with white gold, the gold-tone one with gold-tone links. The moissanite tennis models are silver. For a slimmer wrist, the 3 mm tennis bracelet in 18 cm is the classic size.

The moissanite tennis ring

The moissanite tennis ring has the same continuous row of stones as the bracelet, on 925 sterling silver with a white gold plating, in US sizes 7, 8 and 9. Wear it as the only stone-set ring on your hand, and when in doubt between two sizes, choose the smallest that slides smoothly over your knuckle. How to measure your size is explained in the ring size chart.

How do you wear a tennis necklace?

A tennis necklace shows best on bare skin or with an open collar, at 50 or 55 cm, so the row of stones forms a closed line around the neck. Over a shirt it disappears. For the 3 mm tennis necklace, 50 cm is the most chosen length. Do not combine it with a second stone-set chain; a plain chain 5 cm longer is fine. Width, length and layering are covered in how to style a tennis chain.

Cubic zirconia or moissanite

With this style, the setting decides the quality. The stones need to sit tight and even, with no space between them, and the links need to move smoothly. The silver-tone and gold-tone tennis models are set with cubic zirconia; the moissanite tennis bracelet, necklace and ring with moissanite, a stone with a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale that stays clearer than cubic zirconia. All tennis bracelets and necklaces have a box clasp: a closure that sits in the link and keeps the row of stones unbroken.

Material

The silver-tone and gold-tone tennis models are made on nickel-free copper alloy with a five-layer PVD finish. That finish is harder than ordinary plating, but it is still a layer: take them off before the shower, the gym and the pool. The moissanite tennis necklace and bracelet are solid 925 sterling silver with no layer; they can go in the shower, but also come off before the pool, because chlorine attacks silver.

Care

On a tennis piece, soap quickly gets between the settings, and that makes the stones dull. Brush the row gently now and then with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush, and dry it well before you put it away.

A tennis bracelet as a gift

Not sure of the wrist size? Choose 18 cm for a wrist up to 16.5 cm and 20 cm above that. When in doubt, 3 mm is the safest width: fine enough for every day and next to a watch. Every tennis bracelet comes in a Carpe Ice jewelry box.
