Why Silver and Moissanite Together Are Something Else

Most iced out chains are built from a copper alloy with cubic zirconia. That works and it looks good, but it is a different product. Here the base is a precious metal with value of its own, and the stones are moissanite: 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale against 8 to 8.5 for cubic zirconia. With hundreds of stones side by side that is the difference between a chain that still sparkles sharply and one whose facet edges have worn down.

More Fire Than Diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, made in a lab because it barely occurs in nature. The dispersion is 0.104 against 0.044 for diamond, more than double, and dispersion is what splits white light into colors. At 12mm with stones across the full width you see that as broad bands of colored light rather than separate sparkles.

How 12mm Wears, and Which Length

This is not a chain that pairs with anything. At this width and weight you wear it on its own, without a second chain and without a pendant. It comes in 50, 55 and 60 cm (20, 22 and 24 in); at this weight 55 or 60 is the better choice, because a 12mm chain high against the neck looks squat and needs length to carry the weight. The box clasp with safety lock is there for a reason: at this weight you do not want a lobster that can spring open by accident. Always check the clasp after putting it on.

Care

Solid silver can tarnish through air and sweat, which a silver cloth lifts away again; work along the metal rather than over the stones. Dirt under the setting is what dulls the sparkle first: lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush are enough. Do not use an ultrasonic bath with this many set stones, and store the chain hanging so the weight does not rest on one point. Take it off before the pool, because chlorine attacks silver.
