What a 5 mm stone looks like on a hand

Five millimetres is roughly the face size of a half carat diamond, which is the scale most people picture when they think of a solitaire. Large enough to be unmistakable, small enough to wear every day without catching on things.

Because a solitaire has nothing else competing with it, the stone has to hold up on its own. D colour is the top of the colourless scale, so there is no warm tint, and VVS clarity means inclusions are extremely hard to see even under magnification. On a single stone that matters far more than it does on a pave setting, where small flaws hide among the others.

Moissanite on a ring in particular

A ring takes more contact than anything else you wear, so the hardness of the stone decides how it ages.

Moissanite scores 9.25 on the Mohs scale against 8 to 8.5 for cubic zirconia. Softer stones pick up fine surface scratches and slowly go cloudy, and on a ring that happens years earlier than on a necklace. Moissanite also refracts light more strongly than diamond, so bright light produces flashes of colour rather than plain white sparkle.

Measure a ring you already wear rather than your finger. Place it on a ruler and measure the inner diameter in millimetres.

The finish, honestly

The band is solid 925 sterling silver with white gold plating over it, and that plating is a surface. On a ring it meets more friction than anywhere else, so treat it accordingly: take it off for sport, DIY and washing up, put it on once hand cream has dried, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth rather than a silver polishing cloth, which is abrasive.

Because the base is a precious metal, a jeweller can refresh the plating whenever you like.
