Why One Large Stone Asks More

In a row of small stones a dull one hardly shows, because the rest make up for it. On a solitaire you see everything: every scratch on a facet edge, every film of grease, every difference in clarity. That is why the type of stone matters more here than on any other piece of jewelry. Moissanite scores 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale against 8 for cubic zirconia, which is the difference between a stone that stays sharp and one that looks matte after a year.

What Moissanite Is and What It Is Not

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a gemstone in its own right that is made in a laboratory because it barely occurs in nature. So it is not an imitation diamond and not glass. Its refractive index is around 2.65 against 2.42 for diamond, and its dispersion is 0.104 against 0.044. That dispersion, more than double that of diamond, produces clearly more colored flashes, which show up well on a 5 mm stone.

Choosing Your Size

The ring comes in sizes 5 to 9. These are US sizes and half sizes do not exist; you can find which diameter matches which size in our ring size chart. Measure at the end of the day, because fingers are slightly thicker then than in the morning. With a raised stone it is better not to go too loose, because the stone then turns to the side of your finger and you lose exactly the effect you are paying for.

The White Gold Plating

The band is solid 925 sterling silver with white gold plating over it, which keeps the silver cool in color and holds off tarnishing. On a ring that layer wears faster than on a chain, because your hands touch everything. Take it off for DIY, sport, washing up, showering and swimming. If the layer does wear, silver appears underneath and a jeweler can have it re-plated.

Cleaning

On a solitaire the light enters the stone from below, so grease and soap on the underside of the setting immediately cost you sparkle. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush along that underside are enough. Do not use an ultrasonic bath, because that is meant for solid metal without a finish.
