Rope Chain 925 Sterling Silver (4MM), Our Widest Sterling Rope
The 4MM sterling silver rope chain is the widest we make in solid 925, and the first one that has real weight in the hand. A rope link at this size stops being a detail and becomes the piece you are wearing. It also drapes differently: heavier links follow the line of the neck instead of riding up on it. In 50, 55 and 60 cm.

Who this width is for
A wide chain needs a frame to sit on, or it wears you rather than the other way round.
Take the 4MM if you want one chain and nothing else, worn over a t-shirt or an open collar
Take it if you have a broader neck or shoulders, where a 2MM disappears
Take it if you already own a fine chain and want the contrast for layering
Take the 3MM instead if you wear shirts buttoned or want something for the office
Take the 2MM instead if the chain is mainly there to hold a pendant
Weight, and why it matters here
Silver is sold by weight, and a 4MM link uses substantially more metal per centimetre than a 3MM does, which is where the price comes from. That weight is also the reason this chain feels different to wear: it stays where you put it and it moves as one piece.
Two practical consequences. A heavy chain puts more load on the clasp, so check that the lobster is properly closed rather than half caught, and take it off before sleeping. And be sceptical of any wide silver chain that feels light for its size, because that usually means hollow links.
Choose your length: 50, 55 or 60 cm
50cm: close to the neck. The shortest we would go at this width.
55cm: on the collarbones, and the most balanced choice.
60cm: on the chest, where the chain has room to show its full length.
With a wide chain, err longer rather than shorter. A heavy rope sitting tight against the throat is the fastest way to stop wearing something you paid for.
Care
All sterling silver darkens over time and a polishing cloth reverses it. The advantage of a wide rope is that the twist is open enough for a cloth to reach into, so it stays bright with less effort than a fine chain does. Keep it away from chlorine and perfume, and store it flat in the box so the weight does not pull the links into a kink.
What to wear it with
On its own. At this width a second chain layered over it competes, and a pendant is unnecessary since the link is the statement. If you do layer, use the 2MM sterling rope above it for contrast rather than something of similar width. Compare all widths in the rope chain collection, or see the full necklace collection.
