With Silver You Pay by the Gram

The price gap between 2, 3 and 4mm is larger in silver than it looks, because you are not paying for width but for metal. A rope is also one of the densest links there is: where a hollow or open link contains air, this holds solid material. This chain therefore weighs more than many a broader chain of another type, and that is exactly what you notice when you put it on.

How a Broad Rope Tarnishes

Silver reacts to air and sweat and darkens over time. At this width you see it mainly in the grooves of the spiral: they sit deeper than on the finer sizes and pick up a darker undertone sooner, while the raised sections stay bright. The effect is not unattractive, and many people find it gives the pattern depth. If you want it kept sharp, use a silver cloth and work along the direction of the twist.

50, 55 or 60 cm

At this width a short chain quickly looks squat, so 55 or 60 cm shows a 4mm rope at its best. At 60 cm it hangs free on the chest and you follow the spiral over its full length; 55 cm falls just below the collarbone. Choose 50 cm if you want to keep it inside a shirt collar.

Wearing It Alone

At 4mm this is not a layer but the main event. Wear it on its own, or at most with a clearly finer chain beneath it at least 10 cm apart. We would not recommend a pendant here: the link turns with your movements and is broad enough that most bails will not pass over it.

Care

Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and dry it thoroughly. Take it off before the swimming pool, because chlorine attacks silver. No abrasives or ultrasonic bath. Rinse extra well after cleaning, because a broad spiral holds more soap than a fine one. Store it separately in the box it came in: silver resting against other metal scratches and tarnishes faster.
