What a Curb Link Is

This link goes by several names: Cuban link internationally, curb link in English, and traditionally gourmet in the Netherlands and Belgium. The principle is the same: oval links are hooked into each other, given a quarter turn and then ground flat, so they sit flush against one another. That is why the chain lies flat and does not roll onto its side, which round links such as anchor or rolo chains do. On this chain the edges are then diamond cut: small facets that break the light, so 3mm of silver gives more shine than you would expect from that width.

Solo or With a Pendant

At 3mm it can do both. Without a pendant it looks like a full chain in its own right, even over a T-shirt. With a pendant it carries a medium-sized cross or a dog tag without the chain disappearing. Do check the bail of the pendant: it has to fit over the link and the clasp, so measure it before you order.

1mm Thick: Flat Rather Than Heavy

This chain is 3mm wide and 1mm thick. That makes it a flat, supple link that follows the line of your neck, rather than a thick chain pressing on your collarbone. If you want to feel more silver hanging, choose the 4mm. If you want a chain you can also wear under a shirt all year round, this 3mm is the more practical size.

50, 55 or 60 cm

The lengths include the clasp. 50 cm (20 in) sits around the collarbone and stays inside a shirt collar, 55 cm (22 in) ends just below the base of the neck on most men, and 60 cm (24 in) hangs free on the chest. With a pendant on it, you will usually choose 55 or 60 cm (22 or 24 in), so the pendant does not disappear into your collar.

Care

925 silver tarnishes from air and sweat, and that belongs to the metal. Polish the chain with a silver cloth: on a flat curb link you can reach everywhere. Take it off before the pool, because chlorine dulls silver. Store it separately in the box, so it does not rub against other jewelry.
