Why a Broad Cuban in Silver Differs From Steel
With steel you pay for the shape, with silver for the metal. A cuban link is solid and flat, so a fair amount of silver goes into 4mm, and you notice it the moment you put it on. The practical result is that the chain sits more calmly on the neck: weight holds a broad link flat against the skin instead of letting it lift with every movement. That is exactly what people mean when they say a chain feels solid.
The Easiest Link to Keep Up
Silver reacts to air and sweat and darkens over time. On this link that is easy to deal with: the broad flat faces polish back to bright in a single pass, whereas on a twisted or woven chain a cloth cannot reach everywhere. Tarnish therefore starts in the seams between the links here, and in those seams a little darkness gives the pattern depth rather than looking dirty.
50, 55 or 60 cm
At this width length matters more than on a fine chain, because a broad link high against the neck looks squat. A 4mm cuban sits best at 55 or 60 cm, with 60 cm the length at which it falls free on the chest over a T-shirt. Choose 50 cm if you want to keep it inside a shirt collar.
How to Wear It
At 4mm in silver this is the main chain, not a layer. Wear it on its own, or at most with a clearly finer chain at least 10 cm apart in length. A pendant works if the bail fits over the link: at this width that is far from true of every pendant, so measure before you order.
Care
Take the chain off before the pool, because chlorine attacks silver. In the shower it can stay on: there is no layer that can wear off, and the tarnish silver develops polishes back out. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and dry it thoroughly. Use a silver cloth if it has tarnished, and no abrasives or ultrasonic bath. Rinse well after cleaning, because soap collects between flat links. Store it separately in the box it came in: silver resting against other metal scratches and tarnishes faster.
