Why an Anchor Chain Works So Well With a Pendant
The links are made of half-round wire: round on the outside, flat on the inside. That way the bail of a pendant glides smoothly over the chain without catching, and the chain lies softly against the skin. Because the links are open, at 2.8mm the bail of most pendants fits over it, from a small cross to a dog tag.
Anchor or Cuban?
A Cuban lies flat and tight; an anchor chain is rounder and moves more freely. It therefore falls a little looser and catches the light on the rounded top of every link instead of on one flat surface. Choose the Cuban for a sleek, modern line; choose the anchor chain for a classic, softer look that suits a man just as well as a woman.
45, 50, 55 or 60 cm
On most women 45 cm (18 in) falls just below the neck, and on men it sits tight. 50 cm (20 in) rests on the collarbone, 55 cm (22 in) is the length men choose most, and 60 cm (24 in) hangs free on the chest. With a pendant, count the pendant in: a 3 cm pendant on a 50 cm (20 in) chain ends roughly where a bare 56 cm (22 in) chain would fall.
Care
The rounded links of an anchor chain are easiest to polish by letting the chain slide through a silver cloth. If it has tarnished heavily, leave it briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, rinse and dry it thoroughly. Take it off before the pool, because chlorine dulls silver. Store it with the spring ring closed so it does not get tangled.
