Why Narrower Costs More Here
With silver you pay for the weight, not the width. A king's link is a dense weave that holds far more metal than its size suggests, and here that metal is precious rather than steel. So this 2.5mm costs several times the 5mm in steel while looking narrower. What you get back is a base with value of its own and a chain that can be restored rather than replaced.
What 1 Micron Means
Micron is the thickness of the gold layer. What the trade simply calls gold plated often starts around 0.5 micron, and this layer is double that. Plating stays a finish rather than solid gold, so friction does its work over time, usually first around the clasp. On this chain that is not a problem: underneath lies silver, so no base metal appears and there is no green residue on your skin. A jeweller can also have it re-plated, which only pays off on a precious metal base. There is a layer on it, so take it off before the pool, the shower and sport; the silver-coloured steel chains have no layer and can stay on. Apply fragrance before you put it on, and the layer lasts considerably longer.
The Right Length
At 50 cm the chain stays high and falls inside a shirt collar. 55 cm comes just below the collarbone and is the most chosen length. 60 cm hangs on the chest and works well if you want a pendant on it, because at 2.5mm most bails pass over it comfortably. That is the practical advantage of this width over the broader steel versions.
Or Rather Without a Layer?
If you want to avoid the idea of wear altogether, choose the king's chain in solid 925 sterling silver in the same width. That has no finish that can come off, but it does tarnish and you polish it back with a cloth. So it is not a question of better or worse, but of which kind of upkeep suits you: touching up a layer, or polishing now and then.
