The Cuban link is the best known chain design in the world: flat, interlocking links that sit tightly against one another. Because they lie flat, the chain always falls with the right side facing forward instead of twisting. In gold tone this is the design most people picture when they think of a gold-colored chain. The base is stainless steel with a gold-tone finish applied in five layers of PVD.

Five Layers of PVD, Not Standard Gold Plating

PVD stands for physical vapor deposition. The gold color is bonded to the steel at molecular level inside a vacuum chamber rather than electroplated on top, and Carpe Ice applies it in five layers. That makes the finish noticeably harder and more scratch-resistant than a standard plated layer, the same technique watch brands use for gold-tone cases. On a Cuban the effect matters more than on a woven link: here it is not protruding edges that make contact but broad flat faces, and those rest against your collar and your shirt all day. There is more surface to protect than on any other link type. It is not solid gold, so take the chain off before the pool, the shower and sport, and store it dry.

3mm, 5mm or 7mm

The 3mm is refined and disappears under a collar, which suits it to wearing alongside other pieces. The 5mm is our best-selling size and the point where the Cuban link becomes clearly recognizable without demanding attention. The 7mm is a statement with visibly heavier links. If you want to hang a pendant on it, 3mm or 5mm is more practical, because at 7mm most bails no longer fit over the link.

Care

Take the chain off before the pool, the shower and the gym, and put it on once aftershave or fragrance has dried. The silver-tone version is bare steel with no layer and can simply stay on; this gold-tone one has a PVD layer, so take it off. Soap collects between flat Cuban links and dulls the shine; lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush will lift it out. Dry it afterwards with a soft cloth and do not use a polishing cloth.

Styling

Keep your other jewelry in the same gold tone, and match it to your watch case rather than to the rest of your pieces. If you want a set, the Cuban bracelet in the same width is the obvious addition. If you layer with a second chain, leave at least 10 cm difference in length and pick a clearly different link type to sit beside it.
