Choose your width: 3, 5 or 7 mm

This is the decision that changes the look, and all three are the same chain underneath.

• 3MM: refined and easy. Sits neatly under a collar, layers well with a second chain, and is the width most women pick. The right choice if a pendant should lead.

• 5MM: the classic. Clearly visible on its own without asking for attention, and the width most people mean when they picture a cuban chain.

• 7MM: the statement. Worn over a t-shirt or an open shirt, and best on its own since it carries a look by itself.

A simple rule if you are torn: the broader your neck and shoulders, the more width you can carry comfortably.

Choose your length: 50, 55 or 60 cm

• 50cm: sits high on the neck and stays under a collar.

• 55cm: lands on the collarbones. The most chosen length and the easiest first buy.

• 60cm: sits on the chest and stays visible over a t-shirt.

With a pendant, 55 to 60 cm puts it in the middle of your chest. Measure a chain you already own from clasp to clasp rather than guessing, and between two lengths the longer one gives the more relaxed drape.

Five layers of PVD, not ordinary gold plating

The core is stainless steel, which is why the chain keeps its shape and its structure year after year. The gold colour on top is applied by physical vapour deposition: the material is bonded to the steel at a molecular level inside a vacuum chamber rather than laid on electrically, and at Carpe Ice that is done in five layers. The result is noticeably harder and more scratch resistant than standard gold plating, which matters on a cuban because the broad flat faces are in constant contact with skin and clothing. It is still a finish rather than solid gold, so slip it off before swimming, sport and the shower, put it on once aftershave has dried, and wipe it with a soft cloth now and then.
