Rope Chain Gold Stainless Steel (2mm & 3mm) With Twisted Links That Catch Light
On a rope chain the links are twisted around one another in a spiral rather than laid flat. Where a smooth chain reflects light off a single face, a rope catches it across the whole twist, and in gold that difference is at its greatest: a warm colour on a twisted surface reads from much further away than the same chain in steel tone. The base is stainless steel with a gold-tone finish applied in five layers of PVD.

One Thing to Know Before You Buy It
A rope turns with your movements. Worn on its own that is exactly the point, because a lit edge keeps coming round to the front and the shine moves with you. Hang a pendant on it and that pendant turns sideways during the day instead of facing forward. For a pendant a box or cuban is the better carrier; for a chain that has to stand out by itself, the rope is the strongest choice we have.
Five Layers of PVD, Not Standard Gold Plating
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. The gold colour is bonded to the steel at molecular level inside a vacuum chamber rather than laid on galvanically, at Carpe Ice in five layers. That makes the finish noticeably harder and more scratch-resistant than a standard plated layer, the same technique watch brands use for gold-tone cases. On a rope it pays off fastest, because no link in our collection has as many protruding edges: a raised ridge runs along every turn of the spiral, and that is the first thing to rub against a jumper, a collar or a seatbelt. It is not solid gold, so under heavy friction the colour can thin over time. Take it off for swimming and sport, and store it dry.
2mm or 3mm
The 2mm is refined and works well under a shirt or as a fine layer beside a broader chain. The 3mm has clearly more presence and holds its own alone. If in doubt, take the 3mm: the twisted construction makes a rope look fuller than its size suggests, but at 2mm it stays genuinely subtle.
Which Length Shows the Twist Best
The more chain hangs free, the further you can follow the spiral. At 45 cm it sits high against the neck and the twist stays mostly hidden behind a collar, which is fine if you want to keep it subtle. At 50 and 55 cm the chain lies free and the pattern is clearly visible close up. At 60 cm you wear it over a T-shirt with its full length in view, and that is the length at which a gold rope stands out most.
Care
Take the chain off before the pool, the shower and the gym, and put it on once fragrance or aftershave has dried. More dirt collects in the grooves of the spiral than on a smooth link, and that is what dulls the shine; lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush will lift it out. Dry it afterwards with a soft cloth and leave the polishing cloth in the drawer.
Styling
Keep your jewellery in the same gold tone, because gold beside silver reads as unintended rather than deliberate. If you want to layer, a rope makes a good second layer beside a broader, smoother chain: the contrast between smooth and twisted works better than the same link type twice. Leave at least 10 cm difference in length so they do not catch on each other. The rope bracelet in the same finish completes it.
