Why Width Weighs Heavily in the Price Here
With silver you pay by the gram, and a rope link is densely twisted. Going from 1.5 to 3.8mm therefore puts many times more precious metal into the same length. That explains the price gap within the same line, and it is also the argument for choosing this one: here you are buying material, not just appearance. A plated chain on brass of the same width weighs noticeably less, and you feel that the moment you put it on.
What 1 Micron Means
Micron is the thickness of the gold layer. What is simply called gold plated often starts around 0.5 micron, and this layer is double that. Plating remains a finish rather than solid gold, so friction does its work over time; we deliberately put no number of years on that. What is certain: underneath lies silver, so no base metal appears and there is no green residue. A jeweller can also have the chain re-plated, which only pays off on a precious metal base. There is a layer on it, so take it off before the pool, the shower and sport; the silver-coloured steel chains have no layer and can stay on. Store it dry.
50, 55 or 60 cm
At this width, length is about proportion. A broad chain high against the neck looks squat, because there is too little length to carry the weight. At 60 cm it hangs free on the chest and the heft of the link shows best; 55 cm falls just below the collarbone and works over a T-shirt. The 50 cm is only the right choice if you deliberately want it worn high and compact.
How to Wear It
At 3.8mm this is a chain that wants to be worn alone. Layering rarely works here: a second chain alongside makes the picture busy rather than rich. A pendant is possible if the bail passes comfortably over the twisted link, but the chain is emphatic enough on its own. If you want something finer for under a shirt, the 2.8mm from the same line is the better choice.
Care
Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth are enough. Do not use silver polish, abrasives or an ultrasonic bath: those are meant for solid metal and attack a finish instead. More soap collects in the grooves of the spiral than on a smooth chain, so rinse well and pat it dry.
