On a rope the links are twisted around one another in a spiral rather than laid flat. On a wrist that gives you something a smooth bracelet cannot: with every movement of your hand a different part of the spiral lights up. The base is stainless steel, polished to a silver tone: there is no layer on it, because the steel itself already has that colour.

Why 3mm Is Enough Here
Because of its twisted construction a rope has far more surface than a flat link of the same size, and that surface sits at all sorts of angles. That makes this bracelet look fuller than its 3mm suggests, without the heft of a broad link. It suits moments where a cuban or king's link would be too emphatic, under a shirt sleeve for instance.
A Rope Wants Some Slack
This is the sizing question that genuinely matters on this link type. A rope has to be able to roll around your wrist: if it sits tight the spiral stays still and you lose exactly the effect you are buying it for. So take your wrist measurement plus about 2 cm, slightly looser than you would for a flat link. That comes to 16 cm for a narrow wrist, 18 and 20 for most, and 22 if you deliberately want it loose. If you are between two sizes, go up: too loose moves with you, too tight does not.
Bare Steel on a Twisted Link
The spiral has many protruding edges and those are the first to rub along sleeves and table edges. On a coated bracelet that is exactly where the layer gives up first. This bracelet has no layer: the silver tone is the polished steel itself, and that makes it the carefree version. On a gold-tone rope bracelet a gold layer does sit over the same steel, and those very edges would grow lighter over time.
Layering With a Second Bracelet
A rope of 3mm is one of the better bracelets to stack with, because the twisted texture gives contrast beside a smooth or flat link. Wear it next to a broader bracelet and keep it to two: three bracelets on one wrist quickly gets busy. Beside a watch it works too, as long as you leave a few centimetres of room.
Care
You can keep it on for washing your hands, rain and the shower: there is no layer that could wear off. Do take it off before the pool, because chlorine is harsher than shower water. The gold-tone rope bracelet also comes off before the shower and before sport, because that one does have a layer. Rinse it under the tap after seawater or chlorine. More soap and dirt stay behind in the grooves of the spiral than on a smooth bracelet, and that is precisely what dulls the shine; lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush will lift it out. Silver polish is unnecessary, because no tarnish forms.
