Text or Photo: What Works at This Size

Both are laser cut into the face, but they ask something different of your choice. With text the rule is: the shorter it is, the larger and more legible the engraving becomes. A name with a date underneath works better than a face filled with writing. With a photo engraving, contrast decides it: a face against a light background comes out sharply, while a busy or dark photo loses its detail at 18 by 30 mm. Settle on the wording before you order, because an engraved piece is made specially for you.

Why a Personalised Piece Gets Our Hardest Finish

PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. The gold colour is bonded to the steel at molecular level inside a vacuum chamber rather than laid on galvanically, at Carpe Ice in five layers. That makes the finish noticeably harder and more scratch-resistant than a standard plated layer. It counts here for two reasons in particular. This is the one piece you cannot simply replace, because the name or date on it is the reason you bought it. And it has the largest flat face in the whole collection, resting against your shirt all day: more surface to protect than any link type. It is not solid gold, so take it off before the pool, the shower and sport, and store it dry. The silver-tone version is bare steel with no layer and can stay on; this gold-tone one has a PVD layer, so that one comes off.

Which Chain Goes With It

Keep the chain narrower than the pendant, so the tag leads. A box or franco link is the best choice here because it does not twist, and that is exactly what you want with an engraved face: it keeps facing forward instead of hanging sideways by midday. A rope does turn. At 55 to 60 cm the tag lands in the middle of the chest, which suits this size best. Choose the same gold tone for pendant and chain.

Care

A pendant lies against your skin all day, so it picks up more sweat and aftershave than a chain does. Put it on once fragrance and aftershave have dried, and wipe it with a soft cloth. More soap and dust stay behind in the engraved lines than on the flat face, and that is where the text loses its crispness; a dry, soft toothbrush lifts it out.
