Franco Chain Gold Stainless Steel (3mm) With a Square Strand That Lies Straight
The franco, also called a foxtail, is built from densely woven links that together form a square strand. That makes it feel more solid than its 3mm suggests and keeps it lying straight instead of twisting. The base is stainless steel with a gold-tone finish applied in five layers of PVD.

The Densest Link We Make
Where a figaro or a rope has open space between the links, a franco is woven so tightly that almost no light passes through. That gives you two things. The chain is strong for its width, because there is no single loose link to act as a weak point. And it hangs heavier and calmer, which works well on a gold chain: the tone reads as one continuous strand rather than as a series of separate links.
Five Layers of PVD, Not Standard Gold Plating
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. The gold colour is bonded to the steel at molecular level inside a vacuum chamber rather than laid on galvanically, at Carpe Ice in five layers. That makes the finish noticeably harder and more scratch-resistant than a standard plated layer, the same technique watch brands use for gold-tone cases. On a franco the risk sits in its own particular place: the strand is square, so four sharp corners run along its full length, and a corner is always the highest point rubbing against a collar or a belt. It is not solid gold, so take the chain off before the pool, the shower and sport, and store it dry.
As a Carrier for a Pendant
Alongside a box, a franco is the best choice under a pendant, because it does not twist and the bail therefore keeps facing forward. At 3mm it is also sturdy enough for a heavier pendant than a fine chain can take. Choose the same gold tone for pendant and chain, because two tones mixed read as unintended rather than deliberate.
50 or 60 cm
At 50 cm the chain falls around the collarbone and stays inside a shirt collar. At 60 cm it hangs on the chest and shows well over a T-shirt, which is also the better length if a pendant is going on it. If you layer with a second chain, leave at least 10 cm difference.
Care
Take the chain off before the pool, the shower and the gym, and put it on once fragrance or aftershave has dried. The silver-tone version is bare steel with no layer and can stay on; this gold-tone one has a PVD layer, so that one comes off. The dense weave keeps most dirt out, but what does get in is harder to remove; lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush are the way. Dry it thoroughly afterwards with a soft cloth.
