A franco chain in silver, 3 mm
The franco chain — in Dutch called the vossenstaart, fox tail — is made up of V-shaped links that interlock tightly into a square, compact strand. The result looks almost like one solid piece of metal rather than a row of separate links.
Why this link is different
Because the links close into one another from every side, there is no point at which the chain can bend open or stretch. Alongside the Byzantine link, this is one of the strongest link types there is.
It also lies remarkably flat and smooth. There are no protruding parts, so it does not catch on clothing and has none of the loose movement of an ordinary link chain — it sits still.
Franco or Byzantine?
Both are square and heavy, and people often choose between exactly these two. Franco is smoother and more compact; the Byzantine keeps a visibly woven pattern. If you want a sleek modern line: franco. If you want the weave to show: Byzantine.
Which length?
Available in 50 and 60 cm. 50 cm sits around the collarbones, 60 cm just below the neck or over a collar. Note this runs in a wider step than our other chains — there is no 55 cm here, so if you are between the two, think about which side you prefer.
Material and care
Solid stainless steel: it does not rust, does not tarnish and needs no polishing cloth. Because the surface is flat and closed, dirt has fewer places to settle than on a woven or spiral link — a wipe with a soft cloth is usually enough.
