Franco Chain Silver Stainless Steel (3mm) on which wear does not show
The franco, also called a foxtail, consists of densely woven links that together form a square strand. In silver tone this is the chain that asks for the least attention: it lies straight, does not twist and does not change colour. The base is stainless steel, polished to a silver tone: there is no layer on it, because the steel itself already has that colour.

The Chain You Can Keep On
Two properties make this version suitable for daily wear. The weave is so dense that there is no loose link to catch or deform, and there is no layer over the steel: the silver tone is the polished steel itself. Wear therefore leaves no lighter patch, not even on the corners where most of the contact happens. On a gold-tone franco a gold layer does sit over the same steel, and those corners are exactly where you would eventually see something.
Polished Steel on a Square Strand
On a franco the shape is what decides it, because a square strand has four corners running along its full length and those catch everything that rubs past. On a coated chain that is where the layer gives up first. This chain has no layer: the steel is polished right through to its silver colour, so those corners can go dull or scratched but never change colour. That is where this chain gets its crisp character.
As a Carrier for a Pendant
Alongside a box, a franco is the best choice under a pendant, because it does not twist and the bail keeps facing forward. Silver tone is the easiest colour for this: it works with almost any silver-tone pendant and with the case of a steel watch, without having to match the rest of your jewellery to it.
50 or 60 cm
At 50 cm the chain falls around the collarbone and stays inside a shirt collar. At 60 cm it hangs on the chest, which is also the better length if a pendant is going on it. If you layer with a second chain, leave at least 10 cm difference so they do not catch on each other.
Care
Rinse it with lukewarm water when needed and dry it with a soft cloth. You will not need silver polish, because no tarnish forms of the kind you get on real silver. The dense weave keeps most dirt out, but what does get in is harder to remove; a soft toothbrush with mild soap solves that. You can keep it on for washing your hands, rain, the shower and sport — there is no layer that could wear off. Do take it off before the pool, because chlorine is harsher than shower water. On the gold-tone franco a layer does sit over the steel, and that one also comes off before the shower and before sport.
