Snake Chain Silver (1.5mm) that falls like a smooth band around the neck
The snake link is made of very small plates lying tightly against one another, together forming a closed, smooth surface. There are no openings the way there are on a link chain, so the chain falls like a smooth band around the neck and reflects light in one continuous line. The base is stainless steel, polished to a silver tone: there is no layer on it, because the steel itself already has that colour.

The Finest Chain in the Range
At 1.5mm this is the most understated chain we carry. It does not stand out as a piece in its own right, and it is not meant to: a snake chain is there to carry something, or to sit as the quietest layer under a broader chain. If you want a single chain that has to be seen, a box or rope of 2mm to 3mm is the better fit.
What to Watch Out for With a Snake
This is the honest side of this link type. A snake owes its smooth form to a densely packed construction, and that is more prone to kinking than an ordinary link: once it takes a kink, that kink does not come out. So store it hanging rather than coiled, and pull on the clasp rather than the chain when taking it off. Do that, and it will last a long time.
Bare Steel on a Smooth Chain
On a smooth surface every scratch shows immediately; there is no texture to hide it. On a coated chain there is the added problem that a scratch through the layer exposes a different colour. That does not apply here: there is no layer, the silver tone is the polished steel itself, so wear leaves no lighter patch.
With a Pendant
At 1.5mm this chain passes through almost any pendant bail, including small ones. Do choose a pendant in proportion: something heavy on a fine chain pulls the line out of shape and loads the clasp. For larger pendants a box chain of 2mm or 3mm is the safer base.
45, 50 or 55 cm
If you are hanging a pendant on it, work backwards from where you want to see it: a 4 cm pendant on a 45 cm chain finishes where a bare 53 cm chain would end. Without a pendant, 45 cm stays largely inside a collar, 50 cm falls around the collarbone and 55 cm hangs free on the chest. As a fine layer under a broader chain, take the shorter of the two you are wearing.
Care
You do not need to take it off to wash your hands, walk through rain or shower: there is no layer that could wear off. Do take it off before the pool, because chlorine is harsher than shower water. On the gold-tone snake chain a layer does sit over the steel, and that one also comes off before the shower and before sport. Rinse it under the tap after seawater or chlorine. You will never need silver polish, because no tarnish forms of the kind you get on real silver. Wiping it with a soft cloth is enough; on a closed surface there are no seams for dirt to sit in.
