Why Hoops Sparkle Differently Than Studs

A stud sits still on the earlobe and catches light from one fixed angle. A hoop hangs free and turns with you, so the stones along the curve each catch a different part of the light. The result is a continuous sparkle rather than one fixed point. On top of that, the round shape follows the face: hoops draw attention towards the jawline, where studs keep it at the ear.

What Moissanite Is

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a gemstone in its own right made in a laboratory because it barely occurs in nature. It is not cubic zirconia and not glass. At 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale against 8 to 8.5 for cubic zirconia, the facet edges stay sharp, even when the hoops meet your hair and your collar every day.

More Fire Than Diamond

The dispersion of moissanite is 0.104 against 0.044 for diamond, more than double. Dispersion splits white light into colours and therefore causes the coloured flashes. The refractive index is also higher, around 2.65 against 2.42. On hoops that comes into its own, because the constant movement keeps bringing new facets into the light.

The White Gold Plating

The base is solid 925 sterling silver with white gold plating over it, which keeps the silver cool in colour and holds off tarnishing. It remains a finish, so take the earrings out before the pool, the shower and sport, and apply hairspray and fragrance before you put them in. If the layer wears, silver appears underneath and a jeweller can have them re-plated.

Cleaning

Hoops meet hair and hair products more than studs do, and those residues cling between the stones. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush will lift them away. Do not use an ultrasonic bath, because that is meant for solid metal without a finish.
