Why a Square Cut Sparkles Differently

A round brilliant breaks light into many small points; a square cut has larger, flatter facets and therefore gives broader flashes rather than fine sparkle. Close up that reads calmer and crisper, from a distance more striking, because a single large flash draws more attention than ten small ones. On top of that, a square has more surface than a circle of the same width: 7.5mm square therefore reads larger than 7.5mm round.

Moissanite Against Diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, made in a laboratory because it barely occurs in nature. The refractive index sits around 2.65 against 2.42 for diamond, and the dispersion is 0.104 against 0.044. That dispersion, more than double, is what causes the coloured flashes. On a 7.5mm stone that effect is at its most visible, simply because there is more surface to break light.

Who 7.5mm Is For

This is a statement size. At 7.5mm the studs largely fill the earlobe and are immediately visible from a distance. If you want something for every day, worn under a hat or against a phone, 5mm is more comfortable. Wear these on their own: a second earring or a striking chain alongside makes the picture busy.

The White Gold Plating

The setting is solid 925 sterling silver with white gold plating over it, which keeps the silver cool in colour and holds off tarnishing. It remains a finish, so take the earrings out for swimming and sport and apply hairspray and fragrance before you put them in. If the layer wears, silver appears underneath and a jeweller can have them re-plated.

Cleaning

On a large stone grease shows sooner than on a small one, because there is more surface for the light to pass through. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush along the underside of the stone will lift it away. Do not use an ultrasonic bath, because that is meant for solid metal without a finish.
